EV Terminology Glossary

Plain-English definitions of every EV term and acronym you're likely to see in the news — from BEV and PHEV to NACS, DCFC, LFP, V2G, MPGe, and more. EV Digest covers BEVs, PHEVs, EREVs, FCEVs, and the charging, battery, and policy ecosystem around them; conventional hybrids (HEV) and mild hybrids (MHEV) are out of scope as news topics but are defined here for reference.

Powertrain types

How the vehicle is propelled and whether it can plug in.

BEVBattery Electric Vehicle
Pure electric vehicle powered only by a battery and electric motor — no gasoline engine.
Examples: Tesla Model Y, Ford F-150 Lightning, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Rivian R1S, Chevy Equinox EV.
PHEVPlug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle
Has both a gasoline engine and a battery you plug in. Typically 20–40 miles of all-electric range before the engine takes over.
Examples: Toyota RAV4 Prime, Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Ford Ranger PHEV.
EREV / REEVExtended-Range Electric Vehicle
Wheels are driven only by an electric motor. A small onboard gasoline engine acts as a generator to recharge the battery on long trips.
Examples: Ram 1500 REV, Scout Terra/Traveler (Harvester), Jeep Grand Wagoneer REEV.
FCEVFuel-Cell Electric Vehicle
Runs on hydrogen. A fuel cell converts hydrogen into electricity to drive the motor; the only tailpipe emission is water vapor.
Examples: Toyota Mirai, Hyundai Nexo.
HEVHybrid Electric Vehicle
A conventional hybrid with no plug. The small battery is charged only by the engine and regenerative braking.
Not considered an EV. Examples: Toyota Prius, RAV4 Hybrid, Camry Hybrid.
MHEVMild Hybrid Electric Vehicle
A 48-volt starter-generator assists a gasoline engine. The car cannot drive on electricity alone.
Not considered an EV.
ICEInternal Combustion Engine
A traditional gasoline or diesel vehicle with no electric drive.

Charging levels

How fast an EV can refill, by power level.

EVSEElectric Vehicle Supply Equipment
Industry term for charging station hardware — the wallbox, pedestal, or DC fast charger itself.
Level 1
Standard 120-volt household outlet. Adds about 3–5 miles of range per hour. Fine for plug-in hybrids and low-mileage drivers.
Level 2
240-volt charging (like an electric dryer outlet). Adds about 10–40 miles per hour. The standard for home, workplace, and destination charging.
Level 3 / DCFCDC Fast Charging
High-power public charging at 50–350+ kW that delivers DC power directly to the battery. Typically 100+ miles in 20–30 minutes.
kW vs kWh
kW is power — how fast electricity flows (motor output, charger speed). kWh is energy — how much the battery holds or a charge session delivered.
MPGeMiles Per Gallon Equivalent
EPA's efficiency metric for EVs. 33.7 kWh of electricity is treated as the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline.

Connector standards

The physical plugs used in North America.

J1772 (SAE J1772)
The universal AC connector for Level 1 and Level 2 charging in North America.
CCSCombined Charging System
Combines a J1772 AC plug with two additional DC pins for fast charging on the same port.
NACS / SAE J3400North American Charging Standard
Originally Tesla's connector, now adopted by virtually every major automaker. NACS adoption grants Supercharger network access and is the emerging single standard in North America.
CHAdeMO
Legacy Japanese DC fast-charge connector. Being phased out in North America; the original Nissan Leaf is the most common car still using it.

Bidirectional power (V2X)

Letting the car send power back out, not just take it in.

V2XVehicle-to-Everything
Umbrella term for any bidirectional use of an EV battery.
V2GVehicle-to-Grid
The EV exports electricity back to the utility grid, often participating in grid-services markets.
V2HVehicle-to-Home
The EV powers a house during an outage through a transfer switch — effectively a giant home battery on wheels.
V2LVehicle-to-Load
Standard household outlets on the vehicle itself for tools, camping gear, or appliances.

Battery chemistry & components

What's inside the pack.

NMCNickel Manganese Cobalt
High-energy-density lithium-ion chemistry. Common in longer-range and performance EVs.
LFPLithium Iron Phosphate
Cheaper, longer-lived, and more thermally stable than NMC, at lower energy density. Used in standard-range Teslas, many Chinese EVs, and a growing share of new models.
Solid-state battery
An emerging battery design that replaces the liquid electrolyte with a solid one, promising higher energy density and improved safety. Not yet in mass-produced vehicles.
Sodium-ion battery
An emerging chemistry that swaps lithium for far cheaper sodium. Early commercial use is in entry-level EVs and stationary storage.
Regenerative braking
Using the electric motor as a generator while slowing down, recovering energy back into the battery instead of wasting it as brake heat.
Range
EPA-rated miles a fully charged EV is expected to travel under standardized test conditions. Real-world range varies with weather, speed, and load.

Software & autonomy

What runs on top of the hardware.

OTAOver-the-Air update
Software updates delivered wirelessly to the vehicle, sometimes adding features or fixing recalls without a dealer visit.
ADASAdvanced Driver Assistance Systems
Driver-assist features such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane-keeping assist (LKA), blind-spot warning (BSW), and adaptive cruise control (ACC). The driver remains responsible.
ADSAutomated Driving System
SAE Level 3 and above — the system, not the driver, performs the driving task under defined conditions. Examples: Mercedes Drive Pilot (Level 3), Waymo robotaxi (Level 4).
FSD / Autopilot / Super Cruise / BlueCruise
Brand names for advanced driver-assistance systems from Tesla, GM, and Ford. All currently operate at SAE Level 2 — the driver must remain attentive.

Policy & regulation

The agencies and programs that shape the EV market.

NHTSANational Highway Traffic Safety Administration
Federal regulator for vehicle safety, recalls, and automated-driving oversight.
EPAEnvironmental Protection Agency
Sets emissions standards and publishes EV range and MPGe ratings.
DOEDepartment of Energy
Runs the Alternative Fuels Data Center, funds charging buildout, and supports battery and grid research.
CARBCalifornia Air Resources Board
California's air regulator. Its zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) rules drive much of the U.S. EV market and are followed by other states.
OEMOriginal Equipment Manufacturer
Industry shorthand for the automaker — Ford, GM, Hyundai, Tesla, etc.
Clean Vehicle Tax Credit
Federal incentive of up to $7,500 for qualifying new EVs and $4,000 for used EVs, subject to vehicle, battery-sourcing, and income rules. See the IRS for current eligibility.
ZEV mandate
State-level requirement that a rising share of new vehicles sold be zero-emission. California's ZEV rule is the model adopted by many other states.

What is a BEV?

A Battery Electric Vehicle — a pure electric vehicle powered only by a battery and electric motor, with no gasoline engine. Examples include the Tesla Model Y, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

What is the difference between BEV, PHEV, and EREV?

A BEV runs on battery only. A PHEV has both a gasoline engine and a plug-in battery, typically with 20–40 miles of all-electric range. An EREV drives the wheels only with an electric motor, but carries a small onboard gasoline engine that acts as a generator on long trips.

What is NACS?

NACS, or North American Charging Standard (SAE J3400), is the connector originally designed by Tesla and now adopted by virtually every major automaker. NACS adoption grants access to the Tesla Supercharger network and is the emerging single charging standard in North America.

What does kWh mean for an EV?

kWh (kilowatt-hour) is a unit of energy. For an EV it measures battery capacity — how much energy the pack holds — and how much energy a charging session delivers. kW (kilowatts) is a unit of power, measuring how fast that energy flows.

What is the difference between LFP and NMC batteries?

Both are lithium-ion chemistries. NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) offers higher energy density and is common in long-range and performance EVs. LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) is cheaper, longer-lived, and more thermally stable, at lower energy density. LFP is used in standard-range Teslas and a growing share of new EVs.

What is V2G, V2H, and V2L?

V2X is the umbrella term for bidirectional EV power. V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) sends power back to the utility grid. V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) powers a house during an outage. V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) provides standard outlets on the vehicle itself for tools or appliances.

What is DCFC?

DC Fast Charging (Level 3) — high-power public charging at 50–350+ kW that delivers DC power directly to the battery, typically adding 100+ miles of range in 20–30 minutes.

What is MPGe?

Miles Per Gallon Equivalent — the EPA's efficiency metric for EVs. 33.7 kWh of electricity is treated as the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline, so MPGe lets shoppers compare EV efficiency to gasoline-car MPG.
